Harlem Summer

Harlem Summer: The police came to Mark's job to arrest him for the bootley whiskey. Mr. Hughes walkin as they were hand cutting him. He looked scared for Mark. He hated that he saw that. He wanted to tell Mr. Hughes something but the words wouldn't come out. When he got to the police station fats & crabcakes were there. The police were slapping Mark & Crabcakes around. Fats straighten out the whole thing and they let us go. Mark didn't know if it had anything to do with Sergeant asking Fats to play a gigg for them or not. Fats was big and I wanted to be just like him. Herny came over and showed me the article in the white folks paper.

Mark went to the barbar shop and the older men were telling them how they saw him in the paper and what people would think of him now. It seemed eveywhere he went people where talking about it. Mark ran into Bumpy. He said that he had a message from himself and Queenie. To find out what he said and how things end up for Mark you will have to read and find out.

Harlem Summer: Mark is scared of everything now. He don't want to go outside or anywhere. Now Mark is ready to clean up his life. He's decided that he wanted to become a New Negro and play symphonies. Henry told Mark that was not him, he had swinging in his blood. Mark thought about all the types people he had met over the summer and wondered how did a person choose which person to be?

Mark prayed to God that he get him out of trouble. He told Henry to pray the same thing. Mark's family received a telegram from Stephanie St. Clair( Queenie). Mark's family now knew about Dutch and Queenie. Or they thought they knew.Mama made me go to church. But Mark was glad. He said that God ad helped him out and he wanted to thank him. Crab Cakes showed up at church with his dog and came in. He was Yell over the church, " Mark your whiskey is outside." He wanted to unload the bootleg whiskey at the church but Daddy forund somewhere to put it.
Harlem Summer: Mark talked Henry into going with him to meet Bumpy. Bumpy left them w/ two men who took them to an apartment where Bumpy was. Some cops followed us there. That is where we met Queenie. Queenie paid off the cops. Mark makes a deal with Queenie to pay Dutch off and he will pay her back.
Later on at home Mark meets a cousin that he likes. He tells her about his problems. She thinks that it hislife is fasanating. They vow to keep intouch.

Last week in Harlem Summer, Randy came by and said that he was not going to be able to be my friend anymore because of his parents. Mark's mom told him he had to make up his mind about the funural business. Mark said he was thinking about what he wanted to do. He talked things over with his brother. He went to the barber shop to get my hair cut and messed around and asked if anyone knew where bumpy lived. They said he should not get messed up with him.

Mark found out from his brother that Fats owed everybody money. Mark thought Fats could pay half the money because he had a job. Mark wanted a better paying. At work Mark thought of many jobs. He came up writing a book. He asked Mr. Hugh's about it, he said, He never saw a rich negro writer." So Mark went on to trying to write poems. Ms. Fauset didn't think my poem was so good.Mark went to a rent part. Thats when you have a party and charge for the food, whiskey and music. It looked like they were having fun. Mark knew as soon as he heard the the music that Fats was there. Mr. Hughes came in. He told Mark this is the life! This what ives Harlem it's pulse. When Fats took a brake Mark told him about Dutch.

After coming to the party and seeing yet another side of life, Mark decided what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to play at Jazz clubs and rent parties. At the party Fats introduced Mark to Bumpy Johnson.
