Harlem Summer: The police came to Mark's job to arrest him for the bootley whiskey. Mr. Hughes walkin as they were hand cutting him. He looked scared for Mark. He hated that he saw that. He wanted to tell Mr. Hughes something but the words wouldn't come out. When he got to the police station fats & crabcakes were there. The police were slapping Mark & Crabcakes around. Fats straighten out the whole thing and they let us go. Mark didn't know if it had anything to do with Sergeant asking Fats to play a gigg for them or not. Fats was big and I wanted to be just like him. Herny came over and showed me the article in the white folks paper.
Mark went to the barbar shop and the older men were telling them how they saw him in the paper and what people would think of him now. It seemed eveywhere he went people where talking about it. Mark ran into Bumpy. He said that he had a message from himself and Queenie. To find out what he said and how things end up for Mark you will have to read and find out.

That is where we met Queenie. Queenie paid off the cops. Mark makes a deal with Queenie to pay Dutch off and he will pay her back.
Later on at home Mark meets a cousin that he likes. He tells her about his problems. She thinks that it hislife is fasanating. They vow to keep intouch.

Last week in Harlem Summer, Randy came by and said that he was not going to be able to be my friend anymore because of his parents. Mark's mom told him he had to make up his mind about the funural business. Mark said he was thinking about what he wanted to do. He talked things over with his brother. He went to the barber shop to get my hair cut and messed around and asked if anyone knew where bumpy lived. They said he should not get messed up with him.
Mark found out from his brother that Fats owed everybody money. Mark thought Fats could pay half the money because he had a job. Mark wanted a better paying. At work Mark thought of many jobs. He came up writing a book. He asked Mr. Hugh's about it, he said, He never saw a rich negro writer." So Mark went on to trying to write poems. Ms. Fauset didn't think my poem was so good.Mark went to a rent part. Thats when you have a party and charge for the food, whiskey and music. It looked like they were having fun. Mark knew as soon as he heard the the music that Fats was there. Mr. Hughes came in. He told Mark this is the life! This what ives Harlem it's pulse. When Fats took a brake Mark told him about Dutch.
After coming to the party and seeing yet another side of life, Mark decided what he wanted to do with his life. He wanted to play at Jazz clubs and rent parties. At the party Fats introduced Mark to Bumpy Johnson.

harlem summer
Last night in Harlem Summer Mark, Henry, and Randy(he plays the guitar) found out that they could enter a contest and win money and a record deal. so they started practicing. Marked dad said that he had heard better. Any they still decided to enter. The first group went on and they were good. Other groups started to leave they were so good, we decided to stay. During our audition randy started playing asong we did not practice. The judges were acting like we were not even there. After we left the stage, randy told us that his mind went blank and he just started playing. Then two men were trying to get our attention.
They two men said that they heard our audition and they thought it was ok. They offered us a deal to work a club. We agreed. They said they wanted us to come and check out the place. We went with then and it took a while to get there. It did not look anything like a club and we told the men that. they said it was the back. We entered this room and then it all started. They became mean. They made us have a seat and wait for someone to come. Mark noticed that he reconized one of the men from Dutch S. gang. Dutch came out and he did not say much but he scared the boys to death by getting out a gun and shooting a watermelon. We cried and peed on ourselves. He made us write our name and addresses and told us to leave. Henry and Randy jumped up and Mark was so scared he could not move. They began to talk and I jumped up and ran out. We walked all the way home.

HARLEM SUMMER
This week in Harlem summer Mark went to the party. There were a few blacks and there were some whites. A few well known blacks were there. Mark felt uncomfortable at first. Langston Hughs came over and talked to him and he felt fine after speaking with him. Fats came to the party as planned. As I went over to met him Ms. Fauset went to the door also. She had a not so good look on her face. She asked me did I know Fats and before I could answer Fats said that Mark had hired him to play. He played and everyone loved him. But then a lady asked Fats to write a song for her daughter. I guess it made him mad because he started singing a not so nice song about her. Ms. Fauset got mad. As Fats was leaving we talked. He said that he would introduce me to Bumpy Johnson.

Ms. Fauset Mark's boss invited Mark to party that her boss invited her. At the party there will be some new famous people of there time. Do you remember about Dutch S. if they didn't give him the money something bad will happen well, Marks mom tolled him that there some strange man down stairs. They were watching the house.
One day Dr. Dubois came in the office with Countee Colleen to discuss his poetry. Dr. Dubois also brings many important people to the office like Langston Hugh's and some other. Dr.Dubois came to work one day and tolled everybody that Booker T. Washington had died. Mr. Dubois had some beef with Mr. Washington. Mark invited Fats to the party so they can talk about the problem with Dutch. I wonder what will next?

Harlem summer,
Mark and his father do some pick up work for Mr. Reece. He is a business in Harlem. They go and work at a night club busing talables at Connie's Inn. While there he go to see the great musician. Thats why he wanted to take the job. He wanted to study the greats and make some money.
Mark just heard from Edie that Carb Cakes (a guy that helped fats move some stuff) stole the truck and it's cargo. If they don't return the cargo and the truck then for
every hundred dollars that Dutch lost fats will lose a finger. Dutch was the biggest gangster in N.Y. city.Dutch said they all owe him a thousand dollars. You do the math and fingure out how many fingures that is?
